Medical protective clothing: the evolving ally of operating rooms

Perhaps there is no health space that displays as much health activity as operating rooms. It is the most important room in hospitals, clinics, sanitariums or any health care center. The relevance of operating rooms in modern medicine is the difference that defines the lives of patients.

The work carried out in operating rooms is not restricted to only so-called "surgical" interventions or operations. The provision or application of anesthesia as well as cardiac or respiratory resuscitation activities are some of the procedures performed in these important rooms.

Given its relevance, operating rooms must meet very strict specifications and requirements. One of them are those related to protective clothing that must be used by medical and nursing personnel who work in these areas.

Long gone are the times where surgeries were performed in completely unsanitary places. It is important to note that the evolution of medicine has traveled almost three millennia, which has allowed it to reach modern operating rooms.

Civilizations like the Egyptian made certain types of interventions using rudimentary bronze or iron stone instruments. With the arrival of the new Greek concepts introduced by the father of medicine Hippocrates, differentiated rooms were created for different types of ailments.

Even so, humanity saw a long time pass to include notions of hygiene, in the operating rooms. The arrival of the industrial revolution and the dizzying changes of the 19th century radically changed medical procedures.

The inclusion of asepsis procedures in operating rooms has its origin in the research of the Hungarian obstetrician Ignaz Semmelweis. This doctor's exposition in 1847 on handwashing with calcium hypochlorite and hygiene to care for women in labor was totally revolutionary. From this moment on, the foundations for clinical sterilization were laid, particularly in operating rooms.

Later, in 1883, the German surgeon Gustav Neuber recommended the use of gloves, aprons and boots. At the beginning of the 20th century, the use of hair masks and caps became general in surgical areas. Years later, the hygiene of these spaces would be compulsorily accompanied by appropriate protective clothing.

The main objective of the protective clothing to be used in operating rooms is to serve as a physical barrier that prevents the spread of microorganisms. It is of vital importance in the safety and health of patients, as well as health personnel, by avoiding contact with harmful physical or chemical biological agents.

The main characteristics that protective clothing for operating rooms must meet are the following:
1.High resistance to the penetration of bacteria, dust, alcohol, blood or any type of contaminating fluid.
2.Comfortable. Must allow range of motion.
3.Tensile strength, moisture wicking and high physical strength.
4. It must be made with colors that do not dazzle or produce strong reflections. Blue or green is recommended.

Biodegradability, reusability and safety of protective clothing

Microplastic pollution, known as "pm2.5 in water", has become a direct source of pollution in the ocean, soil and drinking water, affecting human health. Medical   protective coveralls   is almost made of different polymer materials. The development of a new material can replace the existing material to form a new series of products. As most of the existing   protective suits  are designed to be disposable, they are used heavily during the pandemic. Used medical   protective clothing   should be disposed of centrally to prevent secondary transmission of the virus. Therefore, protective clothing materials must be developed to be repeatable and degradable. Due to the particularity of application scenarios, most medical  protective gown  is disposable. Therefore, environment-friendly materials should be considered in the development of medical  protective gown , and must be considered before material selection and protective clothes desig...

Production process of medical protective clothing

Generally speaking, the production of medical   protective coveralls   needs to go through the steps of raw material preparation, cutting, stitching, tightening, adhesive and pressing, finished products, sterilization and disinfection, warehousing and so on. Among them, sterilization and disinfection takes the longest time. Ethylene oxide is mostly used for sterilization and disinfection of materials, which requires 7-14 days of analysis, seriously affecting the production efficiency of medical   protective gown , and a more efficient sterilization method is urgently needed. Irradiation sterilization can be sterilized without disassembly and assembly, which is efficient and prevents secondary pollution. In 2011, Japan has listed the operation specifications of irradiation sterilization in the sterilization standard for protective clothing, which will reduce the sterilization time to less than 1 d. In order to address the shortage of medical protective clothes durin...
